Scholarship Description: A post-doctoral research scientist position is available in the Division of Glycoscience at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. The research will be conducted in the context of NanoCelluComp – The development of very high performance bioderived composite materials of cellulose nanofibres and polysaccharides, a collaborative project funded under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The project will involve the development of polysaccharide derivatives that have the desired functionality to alter the surface properties of cellulose in order to avoid gelling through self-association of the cellulose nanofibrils and facilitate orientation of the liberated nanocellulose fibrils. Polysaccharide bearing moieties, which can enable cross-linking, will also, be investigated. The host laboratory offers state-of-the-art equipment and resources for synthetic carbohydrate chemistry and bionanofiber composites and has an established track record in these areas.

Scholarship Description: This postdoc position starts a brand new line of research – combination of scanning tunneling microscopy with nanoplasmonics for molecular-level sensors, magnetoplasmonics (magnetic + plasmonic materials), plasmon-enhanced photovoltaics and others where detailed nanoscale characterization and low-dimensional materials design are crucial. Newly purchased UHV-VT STM machine will be available for the project that is specially adopted to work with light / nanoplasmonics. The project will be also supported by our regular clean-room based nanofabrication and advanced optical characterization (optical spectroscopy and microscopy). The project will be supported by a graduate student position. In order to improve the gender balance at the Department, we welcome in particular applications from female candidates.

Scholarship Description: The research aims to build a mechanistic understanding of the regulation of leaf growth in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. In the experimental groups the work focuses on the growth regulator auxin and its interaction with the growth processes cell division and expansion. This work is supported by the development of computer simulation models in the mathematical groups, in which experimental treatments are simulated to make predictions that can be verified experimentally. The combination of experimental and computational expertise will lead to a greater depth of our understanding of the regulation of growth regulation in plants.You develop and implement simulation models of the growth of Arabidopsis leaves. Your research will involve the use of parallel and distributed calculations in the simulator, the applied mathematical techniques in the models and the validation and verification of the simulation.
