-The ability to collaborate and work in a team is an important capacity, since several PhD students will work on bordering topics within the same research group.

Scholarship Description: The PhD project can contain several activities addressing some of the above-mentioned issues regarding LCIA of emissions from waste treatment systems. The actual activities must be chosen with due consideration of the qualifications of the candidate and the potential collaboration with on-going projects within and outside DTU, but must lead to a concrete proposal on how to deal with the spatial and temporal characteristics of landfill emissions in LCIA.The Department of Management Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a PhD position with start 1 December 2011 at the latest. Scholarship Description: Functional programming is enjoying an unprecedented surge of interest, with languages such as Erlang, Scala and Haskell seeing high-profile applications in companies large and small. A major reason is the much improved productivity that software developers can enjoy, by adopting functional programming. With intense competition from emerging economies, productivity improvements are vital if the West is to retain its software industry. We have secured a large, five-year strategic research grant to bring these benefits to two new areas: signal processing and low-level control in the system layer of products such as radio base stations for mobile broadband, and real-time automotive software built around the AUTOSAR standard. Our approach is to combine domain-specific languages embedded in Haskell or Erlang with rapid verification based on property-based testing (QuickCheck) and automated proof tools. Our work is carried out in close cooperation with industry, and has the potential to make a real impact in key industrial sectors.

-Allowances will be made for documented leave, including maternity leave, paternity leave, parental leave, military service, sick/disability leave, and carer’s leave.
-The applicant must demonstrate a proven record of internationally recognised independent research accomplishments.
-The applicant must be senior author (first, last or corresponding) on at least 3 articles in international peer-reviewed publications AND be a named author on an average of at least 1 international peer-reviewed publication per year since the award of the PhD (or equivalent).
-The applicant must not hold or have held a significant, independent research award of greater than one-year duration. Scholarship Description: The SFI Starting Investigator Research Grant (SIRG) Programme provides an opportunity for excellent early-career-stage investigators to carry out independent research in the fields of science and engineering that underpin biotechnology, information and communications technology, and sustainable energy and energy-efficient technologies. The award also provides funding for a postgraduate student, who will be primarily supervised by the Starting Investigator (SI). The SI will work with an associated mentor, who will provide the necessary support and infrastructure for the project to take place. SIRG awards are of €400,000 direct costs for a period of four years; 18 awards are expected to be funded through this Call, which is partly funded through the Marie Curie COFUND Programme. Transnational mobility is a new objective of the SIRG programme. Consequently, a significant number of awards in this Call will be offered to “transnational applicants”.

Scholarship Description:During minimally invasive (robotic) surgery (MIS), the surgeon cannot feel the forces he/she is exerting on the tissue, and is thus risking unwanted damage to the tissue. This PhD is part of an interdisciplinary project of which the ultimate goal is to impose safety margins on the surgical instruments to avoid tissue damage during robotic surgery. The focus lies on cardiovascular tissue.

This focus of this PhD will be to search for and/or design accurate models of cardiovascular tissue on the one hand, but fast models of this same tissue on the other hand. Accurate constitutive and finite element models are required to define the maximum allowable load a tissue can bear. On the other hand, fast models are required to estimate and apply these thresholds intraoperatively and thus in realtime during surgery. This research has computational as well as experimental aspects to it. There will be a close collaboration with cardiac surgeons, biotechnologists and the engineers of the division of production, machine design and automation.
