The research will be conducted in the context of NanoCelluComp – The development of very high performance bioderived composite materials of cellulose nanofibres and polysaccharides, a collaborative project funded under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The project will involve the development of polysaccharide derivatives that have the desired functionality to alter the surface properties of cellulose in order to avoid gelling through self-association of the cellulose nanofibrils and facilitate orientation of the liberated nanocellulose fibrils. Polysaccharide bearing moieties, which can enable cross-linking, will also, be investigated. The host laboratory offers state-of-the-art equipment and resources for synthetic carbohydrate chemistry and bionanofiber composites and has an established track record in these areas.

Our research: In recent years, massively parallel accelerator processors, primarily GPUs, have become widely available to end-users. Scholarship Description: The Institute for Advanced Study intends to allocate for the year 2012 two annual scholarships for young foreign researchers (Early-Stage Research Fellowships) for the year 2012, one in the field of Human Sciences and Economics and one in the field of Science and Technology. Each Fellowship will be awarded to an early career researcher in order to allow her/him to carry out research at a Department or Research Centre of the Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna.
